This is a gift so sustainable it grows a garden! With these penguins you can wish anyone a great Christmas!
The plantable paper used in this card is a biodegradable eco-paper that is made with post-consumer materials (that means no trees harmed for this paper!) and embedded with seeds.
When the paper is planted in a pot of soil, the seeds grow and the paper composts away. All that is left behind is flowers, and no waste!
The seed mix includes: english daisy, catchfly, black eyed susan, sweet alyssum, spurred snapdragon, corn poppy.
Grow the Love
These greeting cards are not like others; the paper is handmade from 100% recycled paper and seeds. After the card has been gifted the WHOLE card can be planted in a garden and with just a bit of water and light and love it will grow into beautiful wildflowers. How cool is that?! It's the card that keeps giving.
Recycled Paper and Envelopes
Our paper and envelopes are both made from 100% recycled paper.
Our cards are packaged in compostable bags made from renewable sources such as corn, sugar beet, or potatoes. The packaging conforms to the EN1342 standard; meaning it is biodegradable and compostable. It breaks down quickly into carbon dioxide, water and biomass by microbial digestion.
Help for the Bees
Wildflowers are great for the bees. Planting flowers that produce pollen and nectar, especially during the weeks when crops are not blooming, help to provide nutrition to honey bees throughout the entire season. Love your earth and create lasting memories by planting a card and growing wildflowers.
Green thumb or all thumbs, you can grow wildflowers from our seed paper! Follow the tips below, and you’ll be enjoying beautiful wildflowers in no time!
Indoors or Outdoors?
1. Plant the paper outdoors in the cooler months, autumn through early spring. autumn plantings will take advantage of the winter rains to give you early spring blooms.
2. Plant anytime indoors, then transplant to a more permanent location in early spring.
If potting your plant...
STEP 1 - PREPARE YOUR POT
Fill your pot 2/3 full with good potting soil. Tamp down the soil and add more if necessary. You want the pot to be firmly full, but not packed. The paper can be planted indoors or outside, so you get to choose according to the temperature and conditions at the time of planting (we don't recommend planting outside if it's blizzarding or desert-hot!).
STEP 2 - PLANT THE PAPER
Take your plantable paper and cover the soil in the prepared pot with the paper. It's okay if the paper overlaps. Spread a 1/8 to 1/4 inch layer of soil over the plantable paper pieces and tamp down gently.
STEP 3 - WATER DURING GERMINATION
After planting the paper in your pot, give it a good soak. You want the paper and the soil to be nicely damp but not swimming in water. During the first 10 days, keep the paper moist at all times. The water is necessary for germination.
STEP 4 - CARE AFTER GERMINATION
Once sprouts appear, continue to keep the paper moist but be careful not to overwater. Once sturdy plants appear, water as needed.
If planting in your garden...
1. Loosen the soil.
2. Soak the seed paper in water overnight.
3. Plant the wet seed paper in the prepared soil, at a depth of about 1/4 inch.
4. Water well, especially during the first four to six weeks.
5. Practice weed control.
How does a seeded card work?
Plantable paper is a biodegradable eco-paper that is made with post-consumer materials (no trees harmed for this paper!) and embedded with seeds. When the paper is planted in a pot of soil, the seeds grow and the paper composts away. All that is left behind is flowers, and no waste!
Why give a seed card?
With these seeded greeting cards, the lucky recipient gets to plant the card (yes, actually plant the card in a pot of soil!) and with a little water and sunshine, it will grow into a bouquet of wildflowers. So not only did they enjoy the card you sent and the special message that you wrote, they get to enjoy the beauty of flowers, grown DIRECTLY from the seed card!
How long will a card last?
The cards will last for up to 3 years providing they don't get damp.
Will these flowers help the bees?
What sort of seeds are they?
The seed mix, used in all of our seed paper, features smaller seeds for a smoother surface. It also grows well in most regions.
Will the paper really grow?
Absolutely. A 'small-batch' handmade process ensures our seed paper will really grow! Each sheet is crafted one at a time and slight variations in texture and colour is not uncommon. These subtle variations are the mark of a truly unique product. Each sheet is packed with a diverse mix of annual and perennial wildflower seeds with 150–400 seeds per 4"x4" area.
