Why cousin Lucy likes wax wraps

Lucy Fay
Okay guys, Aunt Rita came home last week with wax wraps from our shop. My first thought was, “huh?”. I mean, what were these wax wraps and what was I doing to do with them? Uncle Charles was equally as dubious.

Well, it’s been a few days and I think I’ve cracked the code. Allow me to explain…

First of all… what are they?

A wax wrap is a piece of material – often organic cotton – that has been infused with wax and some other ingredient goodness (like jojoba oil). You can shape the wrap around your food bowls – basically anything for which you would have used clingfilm.

Now, on to the important question: why are they so great?

1. They’re SO MUCH better than plastic

For serious. Not only is clingfilm a type of single-use plastic that adds to the millions of tonnes of plastic produced every year – but you have no idea what kind of toxins may be leaching onto your food. Gross.

2. They’re breathable

You’ll notice that your food will sweat less and collect less moisture when sealed with wax wraps than your typical plastic wrap. Why? Because wax wraps create a beautiful seal for your food. On the other hand, plastic suffocates food. LET YOUR FOOD BREATH, PEOPLE!

3. They go in the freezer!

Oh yes! If you’re like me and freeze every gosh darn thing, this will be a life saver.

4. They’re beautiful and funky!

I’ve got one word for you: PATTERNS. I’m talking whales, tulips, stars, leaves. Your food wraps don’t have to be boring. Why should they be?

5. They’re compostable

When you’re finished with your wax wraps, you can simply compost them. Amazing, right? These are a great zero-waste tool, and a good first step towards a more sustainable lifestyle.
